PCOS Diet Plan Pakistani: Kya Khayein, Kya Na Khayein (Diet Chart)

Short answer: there is no single "PCOS diet" that works best for everyone. The international PCOS guideline (2023) recommends a healthy, balanced diet and regular activity for all women with PCOS, says no one type of diet is better than another, and notes that managing weight, if you are overweight, can bring clear improvements. In a Pakistani kitchen that means: more daal, chanay, sabzi, dahi and eggs; chakki atta instead of maida; and less mithai, meethi chai, cold drinks and fried snacks.
PCOS can feel confusing. Online you'll find lists of "banned foods" and expensive diets. The good news is that you don't need any of them. Below is a simple, practical PCOS diet plan built around the food you already eat at home.
PCOS kya hai aur diet se kya farq padta hai?
PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is a common hormonal condition. It can cause irregular periods, extra facial or body hair, acne, hair thinning, weight gain and difficulty getting pregnant. The NHS has started calling it PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome), but it's the same condition (NHS).
A few facts that matter for Pakistani women:
- PCOS affects an estimated 10โ13% of women of reproductive age, and up to 70% of them don't know they have it (WHO).
- Women from an Asian background are more likely to have it (NHS), and the international guideline notes it may be more common in the South-East Asian and Eastern Mediterranean regions, which include Pakistan (Teede et al., 2023).
- PCOS is linked to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and weight gain (WHO).
What is insulin resistance, simply? Insulin is the hormone that moves sugar from your blood into your cells. With insulin resistance, the body doesn't respond to it well, so it makes more insulin. High insulin can push up male-type hormones (androgens), which cause many PCOS symptoms. This is why food matters: meals that keep blood sugar steady put less pressure on insulin.
There is no cure for PCOS, but lifestyle changes, medicines and fertility treatments can reduce symptoms and protect long-term health (WHO).
PCOS mein kya khana chahiye?
Build each meal around protein, fibre and vegetables, with a moderate portion of whole grains. These Pakistani foods fit well:
| Food group | Pakistani options | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | Daal, chanay, lobia, anda, chicken, machli, dahi | Keeps you full; slows the sugar rise |
| Fibre-rich carbs | Chakki atta roti, jau mix roti, daliya, brown rice | Digest slowly; steadier blood sugar |
| Sabzi | Palak, bhindi, ghiya, tori, gobhi, salad | Fibre and nutrients, few calories |
| Healthy fats | A small handful of badam or akhrot, cooking oil measured by spoon | Filling in small amounts |
| Fruit | Seb, amrood, kinnu, jaman (1 portion at a time) | Fibre with natural sweetness |
| Drinks | Pani, lassi without sugar, chai with little or no sugar | No added sugar |
Easy plate rule: fill half your plate with sabzi or salad, a quarter with protein (daal, chicken, anda) and a quarter with roti or chawal.

PCOS mein kya nahi khana chahiye (ya kam karein)?
Nothing is completely "haram" for PCOS. These foods are best kept small and occasional, because they raise blood sugar quickly or add a lot of calories:
- Mithai and desserts: gulab jamun, jalebi, kheer, halwa.
- Meethi chai: 3โ4 cups a day with 2 teaspoons of sugar each adds up fast. Reduce the sugar slowly.
- Cold drinks and packet juices: liquid sugar that doesn't fill you up.
- Maida items: white bread, naan, rusk, bakery biscuits, puri.
- Deep-fried snacks: samosa, pakora, chips, especially at evening chai.
- Parathas every day: have a plain roti instead and keep paratha for weekends.
- Very large chawal portions: have one moderate plate with daal or salan, not two.
Our Pakistani food calories list shows how much these foods add up.
PCOS diet chart: 1 din ka sample Pakistani plan
This is an example, not a prescription. Portions depend on your size, activity and goal.
| Meal | Example | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Nashta | 2 boiled eggs or omelette + 1 chakki atta roti + chai with little sugar | Protein first thing keeps you full |
| Mid-morning | 1 fruit (seb or amrood) or a small handful of badam | Instead of biscuits |
| Lunch | 1 katori daal + sabzi + salad + 1โ2 roti | Half the plate sabzi |
| Evening | Dahi with cucumber, or roasted chanay, with chai | Instead of samosa or pakora |
| Dinner | Chicken or fish salan (less oil) + sabzi + 1 roti or a small plate of chawal | Finish 2โ3 hours before sleep |

PCOS mein weight kaise kam karein?
The 2023 international PCOS guideline says that in women with higher weight, weight management can bring significant clinical improvements, and that a healthy lifestyle has benefits even without weight loss (Teede et al., 2023). You don't need to reach a "perfect" weight; small, steady progress counts.
The same guideline:
- does not recommend one specific diet type over another. Any healthy diet that creates a calorie gap and that you can stick to is fine (Teede et al., 2023).
- recommends at least 150โ300 minutes a week of moderate activity, like brisk walking, and at least 250 minutes a week to help with modest weight loss (Teede et al., 2023). That's about 30โ40 minutes of walking most days.
- recommends muscle-strengthening exercise on 2 non-consecutive days a week.
Practical tips:
- Don't crash diet. Skipping meals often leads to overeating at night. Aim for 0.5โ1 kg a week.
- Walk after meals. A 10โ15 minute walk after lunch and dinner is easy to fit in.
- Sleep 7โ8 hours. Poor sleep makes hunger and cravings worse.
- Track for 2 weeks. Writing down what you eat shows where the extra calories come from, often chai, snacks and second helpings.
Doctor se kab milna chahiye?
See a doctor or gynaecologist if you have:
- periods that are very irregular, or no periods for 3 months or more,
- a lot of new facial or body hair, or hair loss,
- difficulty getting pregnant,
- dark, thick skin patches on the neck or armpits,
- very heavy bleeding, or symptoms that worry you.
PCOS is diagnosed with blood tests and sometimes an ultrasound (NHS). Diet helps, but it doesn't replace medical care. Don't stop or start any medicine or supplement without your doctor's advice.
Track your meals and get support
Small daily choices matter most with PCOS: one less spoon of sugar in chai, daal instead of samosa, a walk after dinner. The NutriHygiene app helps you log Pakistani meals in the portions you actually eat and shows your calories, protein, carbs and fat for the day, so you can see your patterns.

Frequently asked questions
PCOS mein roti kha sakte hain?
Yes. Choose chakki atta (whole wheat) or a jau-gandum mix instead of maida, and keep to 1โ2 rotis per meal with daal, sabzi or protein. Skip the ghee on top.
PCOS mein chawal khana chahiye?
You can, in a moderate portion. Have one small plate with daal or salan and salad, rather than a large plate on its own. Brown rice has more fibre than white rice.
PCOS mein doodh peena chahiye?
There's no strong evidence that you must avoid milk with PCOS. Plain milk and dahi are good sources of protein and calcium. Avoid adding sugar, and talk to your doctor if dairy upsets your stomach.
Kya PCOS theek ho sakta hai?
There is no cure for PCOS, but symptoms can be well managed. Healthy eating, regular activity, weight management if you're overweight, and medical treatment when needed can make a big difference.
PCOS mein chai pee sakte hain?
Yes. The problem is usually the sugar, not the chai. Reduce the sugar slowly, half a teaspoon at a time, and try to keep to 2โ3 cups a day.
PCOS ke liye best diet kaunsi hai?
The 2023 international guideline doesn't name one best diet. A balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, protein and whole grains, less sugar and fried food, and one you can follow long-term, is the best choice.
Kya PCOS mein weight kam karna mushkil hota hai?
It can feel harder because of insulin resistance, but it is possible. Slow, steady changes work better than crash diets, and a healthy lifestyle helps PCOS even before the scale moves.
